چکیده

We present deep wide field (16.4× 16.4 ) Washington CT1 CCD surface photometry of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472, the brightest member in the Virgo cluster. Our data cover a wider field than any previous CCD photometry as well as going deeper. Surface brightness profiles of NGC 4472 are not well fit by a single King model, but they can be fit approximately by two King models: with separate models for the inner and outer regions. Surface brightness profiles for the outer region can also be fit approximately by a deVaucouleurs law. There is clearly a negative color gradient within 3 of NGC 4472, in the sense that the color gets bluer with increasing radius. The slope of the color gradient for this region is derived to be ∆μ(C − T1) = –0.08 mag arcsec for ∆ log r = 1, which corresponds to a metallicity gradient of ∆ [Fe/H] = −0.2 dex. However, the surface color gets redder slowly with increasing radius beyond 3. A comparison of the structural parameters of NGC 4472 in C and T1 images has shown that there is little difference in the ellipse shapes between isochromes and isophotes. In addition, photometric and structural parameters of NGC 4472 have been determined.

The Globular Cluster System in the Outer Regions of NGC 4472

We have undertaken a study of the globular cluster (GC) systems of a large sample of elliptical and spiral galaxies in order to test specific predictions of galaxy formation models. Here we present results for the first elliptical in the study, the giant Virgo cluster galaxy NGC 4472 (M49). The galaxy was observed in three filters (BVR) using the wide-field Mosaic Imager on the Kitt Peak 4-mete...

Globular Cluster Metallicity Subpopulations in NGC 4472

Bimodality is a common feature of globular cluster (GC) color distributions in galaxies. Although it is well known that the GC system of the Milky Way is bimodal in metallicity, this has yet to be directly demonstrated for an elliptical galaxy. We use Lick index measurements from the literature to derive metallicities for 47 GCs in the giant Virgo elliptical galaxy NGC 4472. The resulting distr...

Globular Cluster Systems and Their Host Galaxies: Comparison of Spatial Distributions and Colors

We present a study of the spatial and color distributions of four early-type galaxies and their globular cluster (GC) systems observed as part of our ongoing wide-field imaging survey. We use BVR KPNO 4 m+MOSAIC imaging data to characterize the galaxies’ GC populations, perform surface photometry of the galaxies, and compare the projected two-dimensional shape of the host galaxy light to that o...

We present X-ray spectroscopic and morphological analyses using Chandra ACIS and ROSAT observations of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472 in the Virgo cluster. We discuss previously unobserved X-ray structures within the extended galactic corona. In the inner 2 ′ of the galaxy, we find X-ray holes or cavities with radii of ∼2 kpc, corresponding to the position of radio lobes. These holes were...
